Somebody drew a whole dresser of blue-and-white onto it — decorated plates
with fish and turtles and rosettes, a small figure playing a lute, all strung
together on little chains of beads, in fine white line on indigo linen.
Two things about the shape are doing more work than they look like they are.
The sleeves are enormous, and that's the point. A puff broadens the shoulder —
that is what a puff is for — and over a bodice seamed close to a real waist, a
broader shoulder makes your middle read narrower by contrast. Balance, not
concealment. Notice where they stop, too: gathered into a small frilled cuff at
the elbow, which is a narrow point on your arm rather than the widest one. And
all that volume means room around your arm, not something gripping it.
Then look at the hem. It sits just above the ankle — below the calf muscle, where
the leg starts to narrow again — and that placement is the single thing stylists
say decides whether a midi reads elegant or heavy. The fine white edge lands
exactly there, on the narrow part, with a little ankle showing beneath it.
The rest is quietly practical, which you don't often get with a dress this
pretty. A covered neckline, real sleeves, your own bra, linen that breathes. Flat
sandals, gold at the ear, and somewhere with a green door and a long lunch.
Linen · round neckline with contrast white binding · full balloon puff sleeves gathered into a narrow cuff above the elbow with a white frilled edge · fitted seamed bodice with a defined waist · flared A-line midi skirt falling just above the ankle · engineered border at the hem with contrast white edge · close through the bodice and waist, full and away through the skirt · mid-tone ground, densely drawn — fully opaque, and covered enough for an ordinary bra · size to your bust; the bodice is fitted and seamed, so size up if you're between · model is 5'7" and wears a size M · in Painted Porcelain · machine wash cold, gentle cycle, hang to dry, warm iron while damp
