Navy, with a whole garden cut out of the hem — great open flowers and leaves with
the cloth actually removed from inside them, the openings bridged by fine white
embroidery, the edge scalloped to follow every petal. Above them, small white
daisies scattered across the skirt.
That's cutwork, and it's the real thing: a European needlework tradition from the
sixteenth century, and the direct ancestor of lace. Not printed to look like it —
cut, then stitched back together by hand across the gaps. It's also the coolest
thing you'll wear all summer, because the air goes straight through it.
The bodice is cleverer than it looks. It's ruched from the bust all the way down
to the hip — fine vertical gathers running the whole length, with no horizontal
seam anywhere to cut across you. Gathered fabric like that reads as texture: your
eye picks up the folds and the light caught in them, and simply never registers
the shape underneath. It's the most forgiving thing a bodice can do without a
scrap of shapewear involved. Take your usual size, incidentally — sizing up just
gives the gathers something to bunch into.
Then it releases into the skirt at your hip and falls to that scalloped hem,
which dips and rises rather than drawing a flat line across your calf.
The halter ties at your nape, so your neck carries the weight rather than your
shoulders, and the ruched bodice grips your ribs to hold it there. Adhesive cups
underneath — and leave the cutwork alone. A slip under an openwork hem defeats
the whole point of it.
Linen · halter neckline with beaded tie · bare back · fully ruched bodice running unbroken from bust to hip · dropped waist releasing into a gathered skirt · scattered white embroidered daisies · deep open cutwork border with a scalloped, shaped hem · close and gathered through the bodice, full through the skirt · the cutwork border is open by design — skin shows through at the hem, and that's the intention · take your usual size; the ruching gives, and sizing up makes it bunch · model is 5'7" and wears a size M · in Midnight Daisy · machine wash cold, gentle cycle, hang to dry — take care around the cutwork — warm iron while damp
