Golden palmettes held in an ogee lattice, scrolling leaves running between them,
all of it on deep peacock teal — with a vine-patterned band down the front, plain
teal across the shoulders, and a decorative border finishing the hem.
That pattern has a long address. Serrated leaves balanced against rosettes, in
blue, turquoise, green and red, is the grammar of Iznik — the Ottoman tile
workshops forty miles from Istanbul that have been making it since the early
1500s. The Blue Mosque holds twenty thousand of them. Four hundred years later it
still looks like this.
Now the honest part: it gives you no waist. It falls straight from the shoulder
and keeps going. What the design does instead is send the eye up and down — the
patterned placket band runs unbroken from collar to floor, the lattice stacks in
vertical columns, and there's no horizontal seam anywhere until the border at the
hem. If you'd rather have a waist, run a belt round the narrowest part of you and
you'll have one in a second. Keep it slim, and keep it plain — a patterned dress
wants a solid belt.
There's an upside to a loose shirt dress you don't get from a fitted one, too:
nothing pulls at the buttons. No straining at the bust, no gaping placket, no
thinking about it at all. And you can wear it wide open over trousers, which is
half of why you'll keep reaching for it.
