Rows of hand-drawn flowers climbing panel by panel — sage, buttercup, blush,
gold — with a plain cream stripe running between every one. A garden bed seen in
rows, or a bolt of old pillar-printed cotton cut into a dress.
The seams are the design, and they're doing three things at once. They're
princess seams: long curved lines running from the bust right down to the hem,
shaping you the way darts would but spreading it along a curve rather than
pinching it at a point, which is why there's no bulk anywhere. They mean there's
no horizontal waist seam at all, so nothing cuts across you and the line runs
unbroken from neckline to floor. And they're the reason the print works — a dart
would break a stripe. A seam doesn't.
On the pastels, because this is worth being straight about. Flat pale colour worn
head to toe does drain a face; that's true and there's no arguing it. A pastel
print is a different thing entirely, and it's precisely what stylists recommend
instead. These shades are complex rather than icy — sage rather than mint, gold
rather than lemon — with cream panels grounding them and pattern sitting right up
at your neckline, which is where a light dress needs it. And there isn't a frill
anywhere on it. Only seams.
The cloth was chosen for the construction rather than in spite of it: enough
stability to hold ten panels in register, keep its shape at every seam, and come
out of a case without a crease across any of them. The colour holds through a
week of sun, too.
Flat tan sandals, gold at the ear, and a long table under something green.
