Small hand-drawn bouquets, placed rather than scattered — a few across the bodice,
a band of them rising through the skirt, and a fine star-and-vine border at the
hem. Everything between is left alone.
That plain ground is the point, and it isn't plain at all. This is undyed linen —
the flax's own colour, never near a dye bath — which means the shade was decided
by the sun, the soil and the water the crop grew in. Harvested late, flax turns
warm brown; soaked in cold water, it takes a bluish cast. Oatmeal like this
carries tiny tonal irregularities that make the cloth look textured even where
the weave is smooth. It's the reason it photographs quiet and reads expensive.
One honest note: undyed shades vary a little batch to batch. That's the nature of
it, not a fault.
The cut does the rest. The bodice is seamed and fitted with a zip at the back —
properly built, not elasticated — and the waist is marked with a fine border band
before the skirt breaks into tiers below it. That order matters: a defined waist
above the volume is what turns tiers into movement rather than bulk.
The straps are fine, and they adjust, which is exactly what a thin strap needs
when it can't rely on width. Set them where you want them and they stay. A
strapless or adhesive style underneath, and that's the last of it.
And linen only gets better — softer with every wash, for years.
