Irises, painted at close range — violet and yellow, petals opening far larger
than life across the lower skirt, with one bloom laid across the bust and a fine
violet line drawn round the hem.
There's precedent for painting them that big. O'Keeffe enlarged an iris past
life-size in 1926 precisely so you couldn't overlook the details, and the
painting still hangs in the Met. Van Gogh's irises were the first canvas he
started at Saint-Rémy, from the flowers in the walled garden he was allowed to
walk in. It is a very old idea, looking at this particular flower very closely.
Now, the cut-out — and the only thing that matters about a cut-out is where it
sits. Stylists are specific: just under the bust and above the natural waist is
the good position, and the one to avoid is level with your waistline. This one
sits exactly where it should, front and back, edged in violet so it reads as a
drawn line rather than a gap. Age was never the variable here. Placement is.
At the back it ties into a bow with the tails left long, and there's a second
opening below it — the other spot everyone agrees on. Fine straps and an open
back mean a conventional bra is out, so an adhesive style underneath and that's
the whole question settled.
And on a cream this pale, wear something nude beneath it and take thirty seconds
by a window before you leave. Daylight is more honest than any mirror.
