An entire jungle, painted across it — banana palms, a river, white frangipani,
and a cast of toucans and parrots watching from the leaves. Brown-and-cream
striped bands frame all of it: the neckline, both cuffs, the hem, and the whole
length of the slit.
There's a lovely precedent for an imagined jungle. Henri Rousseau painted more
than twenty-five of them and never once left France — he built them out of a
Paris botanical garden, a hall of stuffed animals and a stack of illustrated
books. "When I am in these hothouses," he said, "it seems to me that I am
entering a dream." Critics called his work childish. Picasso disagreed, and the
Surrealists took notes.
The slit is the practical part, whatever it looks like. A straight column to the
floor doesn't let you walk without one — it's what gives you a stride. It's cut
to the front-side rather than dead centre, which is the more forgiving of the
two, and framed in the same striped band so it reads as a drawn line rather than
an opening. One genuinely useful piece of advice: sit down in it before you
decide. A seated mirror tells you far more than a standing one. And if you'd
rather have the coverage, fine nude hosiery reads as skin.
Everything else is covered — crew neck, sleeves to the wrist, hem to the floor.
One leg is the only bare thing about it, which is rather the point.
