Great chartreuse blooms outlined in chocolate, spilling across cream, with a
scrolling border framing the hem and running in two long panels down the back.
It's the barkcloth vocabulary of the sixties, drawn bold.
Chartreuse is the colour of this summer — and with chocolate brown it's a
seventies pairing that has come all the way back around to current. It works here
because it's never a flat wall of it: every bloom is outlined in dark and set
against cream, so the colour arrives broken up rather than all at once.
Now, the sleeveless question — which has nothing to do with age and everything to
do with how a dress is cut. Three things make one easy to wear: a high armhole,
which covers more and doesn't gape; a structured fabric that holds its own shape
instead of clinging; and an A-line that moves the eye downward. This has all
three. Hemp and linen together are about as structured as a summer cloth gets,
and the skirt swings away from you from the bust down.
The front sits high and covered. The back doesn't — it opens between two printed
panels, all the way down. That's the trade, and it's a good one: nothing to think
about at the front, and something worth turning around for. An adhesive or wing
style underneath handles the rest, and the halter carries its weight at your nape
rather than your shoulders.
